Did you know that the world is warming faster than at any other time recorded in history? The data from the report released by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) provided guidance for the start of Datum’s campaign regarding the launch of their ESG program, called Green Code.
The environment is facing one of the most concerning moments in history. Almost the entire global population (99%) breathes polluted air, according to the WHO. In just the first quarter of 2022, the Legal Amazon – an area that encompasses nine states in Brazil belonging to the Amazon basin – recorded the highest number of deforestation alerts since 2016, according to the National Institute for Space Research (INPE).
In line with the changes the world has been experiencing in recent years, we realized that it was time to take a few more steps with our ESG initiatives, this time bringing visibility to environmental issues.
Why is Datum going to reward people with trees?
Among our ESG initiatives, we have already embraced diversity and inclusion by taking actions aimed at making the tech market more diverse. We work daily with experts to build a safe environment for everyone, and we have training and development programs for all individuals.
That’s why we launched the Green Code project, which will be present in the organization, raising awareness among employees and making a commitment to the environment. Through this project, we are putting into practice one of our biggest dreams: providing resources for our employees to become drivers of environmental restoration. The new campaign, “Building a new future together,” will reward employees with tokenized trees on their work anniversary.
How will the initiative work in practice?
Blockchain was already known for driving some of the most advanced green solutions available in the market, such as microgrids that allow residents to trade environmentally friendly energy. However, as the information technology sector is responsible for 14% of the world’s carbon footprint—a significant increase compared to 1.5% in 2007—undertaking initiatives to minimize these effects becomes essential to make the world more sustainable.
Keeping up with these changes, we brought the idea of rewarding employees with tokenized trees and supporting environmental reforestation, which will turn individuals into agents of change to build a more sustainable world.
The initiative will work as follows: when an employee celebrates their work anniversary at Datum, they become a driver of environmental restoration. This movement, which contributes to environmental reforestation, also allows individuals to have access to a cryptocurrency backed by trees, which are tokenized and generate carbon credits—a type of asset valued worldwide and tradable on a secondary market.
Therefore, when celebrating another work anniversary, employees will receive a kit consisting of an eco-bag made from recycled PET bottles, a button, and instructions on how to access the cryptocurrency. Rewarding employees who celebrate work anniversaries with trees brings us closer to our commitment to the world we desire.
