What is the first thought that comes to your mind when we talk about leadership ? Maybe you think that this person should convey confidence, strength, inspiration, care and be an example when it comes to empathy. There are many characteristics that we could mention here, but when imagining this figure, is the image that goes through your mind that of a female leader?
It was the queen of retail and current president of Magazine Luiza, Luiza Helena Trajano, who said in a lecture that “leadership is taking people way further than they imagine they can go” – a nice way to define how many women have been managing their teams.
As much as there is no lack of advantages in having a female based leadership in the company, when it comes to occupying higher positions, they are still a minority. In Brazil, they occupied only 37.4% of managerial positions and received only 77.7% of men’s income in 2019, according to a survey carried out by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
In contrast to the data presented, we are proud to say that at Datum, women occupy 100% of the leadership positions of the corporate team. They have been putting on a show by inspiring their teams and guiding them on a journey of development and evolution.
Thinking about bringing more of the trajectory of Datum leaders, we invited Talent Experience Leader, Graziela Santin, and Talent Acquisition Leader, Dayana Franklin, to tell us more about their perceptions about women in management and their experiences on the purple planet.
“I believe that the main characteristics of female leadership are resilience, creativity, reinvention, hospitality and sensitivity”.
Dayana Franklin, has a specialization in Industrial and Organizational Psychology and has more than ten years of experience in the area of Human Resources. She says that she has worked in different areas during her professional life, from holding the position of early childhood education teacher to reaching the HR area.
In a chat through a video call, the manager started the conversation by talking about the importance that leaders play in the development of their team members.
“Every day, when I lay my head on the pillow, I think the most rewarding thing is the feeling of accomplishment, to help the development of team members, bringing out the best they have to offer. When this person manages to bring all this to light, automatically, the company grows too – she points out”.
Graziela Santin, is our second interviewee, she also has a unique background, as well as a lot of experience. She has a specialization in Human Resources Management and an MBA in Human Development and Innovation, and has a long trajectory in the Hospitality area, until her arrival in the technology universe here at Datum. In our chat, we address different issues, the main leadership challenges being one of them:
“I believe that the most challenging thing is to deal with people’s differences and still manage to align all of them, seeking the company’s objective – she adds”.
Main characteristics of female leadership
For Talent Acquisition Leader, Dayana, female leadership is marked by humanization. According to her, resilience, innovation and creativity are the most striking points of this leadership.
“I believe that the main characteristics of female leadership are resilience, creativity, reinvention, hospitality and sensitivity”. We believe that we, women leaders, “slay a dragon a day”, which makes us resilient to grow – she points out.
Graziela complements her team member’s speech, inserting the dynamism of women as an important characteristic, which she believes to be part of female leadership. “The ability to multitask is an important skill for the woman who manages a team and empathy is another point in favor of female leadership”.
We can cite different advantages when we talk about the presence of women in leadership positions, and surpassing your competitors is one of them. According to a study by the consulting firm McKinsey, organizations that have executive teams with gender equality are 14% more likely to outperform their competitors.
Key differences when leading at Datum
After learning more about the professional trajectory of the two professionals, we were curious to understand why they had chosen Datum so that they could work managing and enchanting teams.
“Datum is a welcoming company, with inspiring leaders and women who are great examples. I had never worked in a company that had a (corporate) leadership made up of all women. A leadership that is both sensitive and strong, being sensitive to human nature and respecting each person’s different way and personality – points out Dayana”.
According to Talent Experience Leader, Graziela, sharing ideas daily with other women is very inspiring and welcoming, as they all support each other and learn together.
“We can see and feel a huge support network. We support, understand and give each other a hand in this journey that is managing teams – contextualizes, Grazi”.
She also mentions another important point from Datum: the horizontal culture, where everyone can propose ideas for improvement and professionals are treated as specialists in their fields.
“In the companies where I worked, I always felt a distance from the CEO and CTO, but being close to these people, here at Datum, makes the day to day more inspiring. This also allows us to share our ideas, knowing that they are respected and considered in a true way – explains Grazi”.
